Lima, Peru’s SCHMERZ return with LIMERENCE, their second album and the latest evolution of a project that has steadily moved through the darker edges of coldwave, darkwave and electronic post-punk.
Two years in the making and entirely self-produced, LIMERENCE is built around a simple but unsettling idea: “A state you don’t escape. Only repeat.” The album explores the space between memory and illusion, where desire becomes fixation and the past refuses to stay in the past.
The record follows the evolution of that obsession through cold synthesizers, post-punk guitars and atmospheric, lo-fi production. Tracks such as “Noctivague,” “Limerent” and “Ecdysis” create a world that feels simultaneously intimate and distant, with the music constantly circling back on itself.
The album was preceded by SCHMERZ’s April release of “Love My Way,” a cold and introspective reworking of The Psychedelic Furs classic that the band described as a prelude to LIMERENCE. It now feels like an appropriate introduction to the album’s themes: longing, distance and the inability to escape what keeps drawing you back.
SCHMERZ began as a solo project in Lima before developing into a duo led by Hitam Laga and Casiopea. Their previous full-length, Lamentum, explored death and its emotional aftermath. With LIMERENCE, that darkness takes a different form—less concerned with death itself and more interested in the things we continue to carry with us.
There are already signs that the album is finding its audience. “Noctivague” was recently featured by Communion After Dark, placing SCHMERZ alongside a selection of contemporary darkwave, industrial and synth-driven artists.
LIMERENCE is ultimately an album about being unable to let go. Its cold electronics and shadowy post-punk textures don’t simply create an atmosphere—they reinforce the album’s central cycle of memory, desire and repetition.
