There are some wounds that never quite close. Some desires refuse to die.
Clan of Xymox return today with ‘Broken Heart’ / ‘Fire’, a new double AA single steeped in the shadowy romanticism, electronic pulse and melancholy that have defined the Dutch darkwave institution for more than four decades.
Released today, September 23, 2026, the single is the first new music from Clan of Xymox since their 2024 album Exodus — and finds frontman and co-founder Ronny Moorings once again exploring the darker spaces where love, loss and obsession collide.
Describing ‘Broken Heart’ as “a journey through heartbreak, desire and emotional combustion”, Moorings builds the track around haunting synths, a hypnotic pulse and vocals that seem to drift somewhere between longing and resignation.
The result is a song about the strange aftermath of losing someone while remaining unable to let them go.
As Moorings puts it, the track is an attempt to capture “the tension between losing someone and still being consumed by them.”
For Clan of Xymox, heartbreak has rarely sounded so beautifully cold.
Formed in the Netherlands in 1982, the band originally signed to the legendary UK label 4AD, where their atmospheric blend of post-punk, electronic darkness and gothic romanticism earned them a devoted following across the UK and mainland Europe.
By the late 1980s, a deal with PolyGram brought US chart success and a shift towards a more commercial synth-pop sound, incorporating alternative dance influences. But as the gothic and electro-industrial underground gathered renewed force during the following decade, Clan of Xymox found themselves at the heart of a new generation of darkness.
They have remained there ever since.
Across numerous albums, line-ups, tours and festival appearances, Ronny Moorings has continued to steer Clan of Xymox through the ever-changing landscape of dark alternative music, maintaining the band’s international presence without losing the nocturnal atmosphere at its core.
In 2026, the band have once again taken their sound to some of Europe’s most established gothic and alternative stages, including main-stage appearances at Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig and M’era Luna.
And the year isn’t over yet.
