CROWJANE continues her descent into post-punk’s darker margins with “Songs of Sparrows,” the second preview from her forthcoming album Odium. Built around proto-goth guitar textures, noir-punk atmospherics, and the shape-shifting vocals of Heather Galipo, the track evokes the spectral drama of early goth while remaining firmly rooted in contemporary darkwave.
Accompanying the single is a striking black-and-white performance video steeped in German Expressionist aesthetics and ’80s death rock imagery. Directed by Zachary T. Crawford with cinematography by Dante White Aliano, the visual draws inspiration from the shadow-drenched worlds of F.W. Murnau and Fritz Lang, blending angular lighting, stark contrasts, and underground Los Angeles grit into something both period-authentic and timeless.
“Songs of Sparrows” follows May’s “Reign,” a post-industrial pulse of a single that drew comparisons to Suicide and further expanded CrowJane’s sonic palette. Together, the releases suggest Odium will continue the evolution that began with 2020’s acclaimed debut Mater Dolorosa, a record that established CrowJane as one of darkwave’s most distinctive voices.
Released via Kitten Robot Records, “Songs of Sparrows” was produced by Paul Roessler (The Screamers, Nina Hagen, 45 Grave) and Daniel Muñoz (Egrets on Ergot, Cinema Strange). With Odium on the horizon, CrowJane’s latest offering reinforces her place at the forefront of today’s gothic and post-punk underground.
