Hailing from Montreal, The City Gates have carved out a distinct space on the international alternative circuit with a sound steeped in shadow and melody—brooding, immersive, and emotionally resonant. Across their two full-length releases, Age of Resilience (Icy Cold Records / Velouria Recordz) and Forever Orbiter (Northern Light Records), the band has steadily built momentum, landing on multiple global album charts and earning recognition from key outlets within the scene.
Their newest single, “Capitol Hill,” sharpens that identity. Propelled by insistent post-punk rhythms and veiled in gauzy shoegaze atmospherics, the track drifts on distant, spectral vocals that feel both intimate and untouchable. It serves as the first glimpse into their forthcoming third LP, Chimera, due May 15 via Icy Cold Records and Velouria Recordz. Expanding further into colder, more cavernous sonic terrain, the album promises a darker, more enveloping experience, featuring standout cuts like “Lapidation” and “La douleur (des mortels).”
